He is an indie-rock expert. [<\/span>2]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n n<\/p>\n He legally changed his name in 1986, and argues that “no one refers to Iggy Pop<\/a> as ‘James Osterberg'”. When asked to explain his name, Nardwuar once quipped “Nardwuar<\/em> equals dumb silly name, like Sting<\/a>; Human<\/em> means human, as in Human Fly<\/a>; and Serviette<\/a><\/em> is something you can’t get in the U.S. because down there they’re called napkins<\/a>.”<\/p>\n Nardwuar’s interviews are frequently shown on MuchMusic<\/a>‘s Going Coastal<\/a>, or printed in Chart<\/a><\/em>. A somewhat common reply by edgy rock starsnsuch as Courtney Love has been “Fuck you!”[<\/span>5]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n n<\/p>\n Due to his upfront and esoteric style he has been attacked verbally, physically threatened, and intimidated by people such as Sebastian Bach<\/a> of Skid Row<\/a> (who stole Nardwuar’s tuque<\/a>); the band Quiet Riot<\/a> (who chased Nardwuar and crew down the street); and Dave Rowntree<\/a> of Blur<\/a>. He once received Lemmy<\/a>‘snanswering machine message when Lemmy was not made aware of theninterview time by his publicist. Guerrilla journalism or not,nNardwuar’s style is very much based on taking the piss<\/a> out of his subject. Some of his subjects recognise it and successfully manage to reverse the scenario on him, especially Iggy Pop<\/a>, David Cross<\/a> and “Weird Al” Yankovic<\/a>. Some misinterpret his hijinks as intentionally disrespectful, particularly Henry Rollins<\/a> and pornographer Al Goldstein<\/a>.<\/p>\n n<\/p>\n More often the experience confuses the celebrities. Members of GWAR<\/a> tried not to laugh while in character. Jello Biafra<\/a>nwas impressed with his guerrilla interview style, but became noticeablynangered in a 2000 interview when Nardwuar began to cajole Biafra aboutnBiafra’s lawsuit against former Dead Kennedys<\/a> band mates [<\/span>8]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>. Others who have appreciated Nardwuar’s interview include Nirvana<\/a>, Kelly Rowland<\/a>, Marilyn Manson<\/a>, Franz Ferdinand<\/a>, Ron Jeremy<\/a>, N.E.R.D.<\/a> and Michael Moore<\/a>.<\/p>\n n<\/p>\n Nardwuar does extensive research on the interviewee to confuse,nscare or impress them; often bringing up minutia about band members’npasts that they have a hard time recalling, until he coaches themnalong. Frequently, he will also attempt to make connections, no matternhow obscure, between the person or subject at question and Canada.
