R.I.P. Bill Aucoin

I just found out that the legendary Bill Aucoin has died of cancer at his home in Florida. Man, that sucks. He managed Kiss, Billy Idol, Piper, Lordi, Flipp, and one of my favorite bands of all time, STARZ. The guy was in the trenches during the best time in rock. River Run Recap:

I just got back from the Laughlin River Run in Laughlin, NV and had a GREAT time. I arrived on Thursday afternoon in Las Vegas. I took a shuttle to the Riverside Hotel and Casino where my good friend Joe Klein had me a comped suite! After resting for a little while and going to Joe’s house, we went across the street to the Laughlin Chamber of Commerce to pick up our media badges from Jill McCoomber, the press liason. Later that night we walked along the beautiful Colorado River to the Golden Nugget and saw an Aerosmith tribute band called Aeromyth. The singer, Chris Van Dahl, is a dead ringer for Steven Tyler. Looking back on it, I wish I would have interviewed him and said he was the real Steven Tyler. The band was not very good but he actually sang the songs pretty well. He screwed up some lyrics. I think this is the guy who is gonna be playing with me in the Jimmy Crespo thing if it happens. They were playing 3 sets a day for the entire weekend. The set I watched was not great. The guy playing Joe Perry, while looked the part, he didn’t even try to play Joe’s parts. The Brad Whitford guy played great but did not even closely resemble Brad. Some day I’m gonna do a documentary on tribute bands. I’ll be posting some video of them performing soon.We also saw a couple of songs from a Van Halen tribute band that was not even worth mentioning.

Friday we went to see Three Dog Night at Harrah’s Casino Resort, courtesy of a very nice woman named Cecelia Marotto. Three Dog Night were a little before my time but that band had so many hits, I thoroughly enjoyed the show. I will be posting some video from them soon as well. Of all the hotels on the strip, I have to say that Harrah’sis probably the nicest one. They are also the only one with a beach, which we relaxed on for the afternoon, beers in hand.

Saturday Joe arranged for comped tickets to the Cheap Trick show at the Aquarius Hotel and Casino through Sean Hammond. I was staying in the next hotel over so in the morning I went over and hung out near the outdoor stage like a true superfan. We asked Rick Nielson’s guitar tech what time the soundcheck was. He said that the band was not soundchecking, that the crew would be checking. That’s understandable, since the band has been together for so many years. I filmed a couple of bits with Joe Klein outside the fence. Our tickets at the show were pretty good seats about 20 rows back but since we had media badges, the security guys let us sit in some empty seats in the front row. The show was fantastic! I tried taping the set but for some reason my iriver didn’t record so I don’t remember the exact set list. They played a few songs from the new album, one from Rockford, some hits. They also played Don’t be Cruel, Heaven Tonight, Baby Loves To Rock and The Ballad of TV Violence.

This weekend was an absolute blast!

Cheap Trick Alex Chilton Tribute at SXSW

On Friday while at SXSW we went to the BMI stage to see Cheap Trick perform. I found out earlier in the day while at Flatstock, a poster show inside the Austin Convention Center, that Bun E. Carlos was not touring with them. A guy selling posters told me after I commented on the CT poster he was selling. About 5 minutes later, who do I see walking the floor? Only the greatest singer in the world!

I walked up to him like a high school kid and said something really lame like “Hi Robin, I’m a huge fan. I think you are the best singer in the world. Can I take my picture with you?”
Robin: ” sure, no problem”
Me: “Is Bun E. playing tonite?”
Robin: “No, he’s in a convalescent home. We are all old men. Dax Nielson is playing with us tonite”
Me: “I know” (trying to sound smart, not realizing I just asked if Bun E. was playing the show)
Me: “The last 3 Cheap Trick records are 3 of the best records ever made. I especially like Special One”
Robin: “Thanks”
Me: “Have a great set tonite”

I go find my friend Jasper and tell him I just met Robin Zander. He flips out and runs up to Robin and geeks out even more than me. We continue to snap pictures with the greatest singer in the world. He was really nice to us, as he could tell we were worshiping the ground he walked on.

That night at the show, we arrive just as they are getting ready to start. The place is packed. I mean like 10,000 people packed. We fight our way through the crowd to somewhere near the sound booth. Jasper recognizes the sound man as a guy from Detroit from the band Speedball. He jumps the barrier to the soundboard, lands flat on his face, then gets up and goes to the sound guy and says something. He runs back to us and says “It’s cool, come on over the baricade!” So we watched the entire show from the comfort of the soundbooth area!

I’m trying to film several songs and each time, Jasper is shoving me, trying to screw up my shots and yelling “CHEAP TRICK!”.

All in all, a great time was had.

Cheap Trick played almost no hits, with the exception of I Want You To Want Me, Surrender and Dream Police. They sounded fantastic, even without Bun E. in the band. Included in the set was a nice tribute to Alex Chilton, with the songs Sleep Forever and Heaven Tonite.

Doug Fieger Tribute – Rock and Roll Geek Show 390

When I heard that Doug Fieger passed away on Feb 14, 2010, I got really sad. I met him back in 2006 when I covered the Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp for the show and he seemed like a really nice guy. Of all the people at that thing, he was my favorite. Most people wrote off The Knack as a one hit wonder or a novelty band or something like that. Go back and listen to that first Knack record and you will hear some of the best pop songs ever put to record. Like a lot of people do when a musician they like dies, I put on some of Doug’s music and it was so good, I started seeking out some other stuff from The Knack. I am glad I did, because there are some great records out there.
My friend Joe Klein called me a few days ago and the subject of Doug Fieger came up and he reminded me that he produced Doug’s old band The Sunset Bombers. I thought it might be fun to have Joe on the show and tell some Doug Fieger stories and we could listen to some tunes together.
What you get on tonite’s show is just that. 2 guys paying tribute to one of rock’s most under appreciated talents. We play a lot to songs, tell some great stories and listen to some stories from Doug Fieger himself, pulled from the RnR Geek archives. I hope this show turns you on to some of Doug’s music and just how great of a guy he was.

Michael Butler vs. Anvil – Hairbangers Ball Interview

On Saturday Feb 6, 2010 , I interviewed Anvil at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. They’ve been touring pretty much non-stop since the documentary “The Story of Anvil” came out. I brought along Eddie Daroza, who ran the camera for me.
Thanks to super producer Shane Chisholm and Julie Ark for lining up the interview for me.

Bio
If you were to look up the word “perseverance” in the almighty handbook of heavy metal, there may very well be a photo of Canadian metalists, Anvil. Since their 1981 debut, Hard N’ Heavy, the group – which was co-founded by singer/guitarist Steve “Lips” Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner – has been listed by many as one of the creators of the thrash/speed metal genre (especially on such Chris Tsangarides-produced classics as 1982’s Metal on Metal and 1983’s Forged in Fire). But due to subsequent bad record deals, bad management, and just plain bad luck, Anvil appeared to take a back seat to a new wave of metal bands – most of which listed the group as a prime influence. However, Anvil has never stopped rocking, and with the arrival of the critically-acclaimed/surprise hit film, “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” (directed by Sacha Gervasi), the group is back where they belong – at the forefront of heavy metal.

“It’s quite amazing, really,” admits Lips. “It’s the prime example of what it means to be a rock n’ roller, go out there, and try to make it. And believe me, most of the scene is guys like me. It’s very seldom and rare that anybody makes it – to what people mean by ‘making it’.” Reiner seconds the sentiment – “The movie has gone beyond my expectations. It’s been mind-blowing – to see what’s come from the movie and how much it actually has helped the band.” When asked what their favorite scene was, both agree on the unveiling of a certain painting of Reiner’s (that resides down a stairway in his home – you’ll have to see the movie for more info!). As far as a scene from the film that is hard to watch, Reiner says, “There’s nothing hard looking back at it,” while Lips feels differently: “My least favorite part is when they show me naked!”

And although there are certainly some zany Spinal Tap-like parallels between Anvil and David St. Hubbins and company, Anvil has always been taken seriously by metalheads, including some very well known ones, who praise the band in the film. “Anvil was one of those bands that just put on this really amazing live performance,” said Velvet Revolver/ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, while Motorhead singer/bassist Lemmy added, “They were a great band – I always liked Anvil,” and Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich gushed, “These guys were going to turn the music world upside down.”

Having issued a total of seventeen releases between 1981 and 2004, the group, that also includes bassist Glenn Five, reconnected with Tsangarides (Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest) for their thirteenth studio album, eighteenth release overall, This is Thirteen. The turbulent-yet-triumphant sessions were well-documented in the “Anvil!” film. “It differs in one vast sense – the production,” explains Reiner. “‘This is Thirteen’ was produced by Chris Tsangarides, who produced ‘Metal on Metal’ and ‘Forged in Fire’ – probably the most famous, classic Anvil albums. With Chris, we created that classic Anvil magic sound – that previous records were lacking. The last four or five albums, material-wise, were all similar. We had been trying to find the direction back to the classic Anvil style and sound – it’s just the production hadn’t been up to scratch. Chris was a big missing part on our past albums.”

As evidenced by such vintage Anvil-sounding ragers as “Feed the Greed,” “American Refugee,” and the title track, This is Thirteen is certainly the strongest Anvil release in a long time. Originally put out by the band themselves and sold through their website, the album is now seeing proper national distribution via CD (with “Thumb Hang” added as a bonus track) as well as a double gate-fold vinyl version (including two additional bonus tracks) through VH1 Classic Records. Additionally, due to the film’s success, Anvil received an invite from AC/DC to open mammoth football stadium shows for the legendary Aussie rockers on their “Black Ice” tour, while a book about the group’s career (which shares the same name as the movie) appeared as well. Add to it a DVD release of the movie in Fall 2009, and a new studio album that is already written and just needs to be recorded (titled Juggernaut of Justice), and it certainly appears as though Anvil is making the most out of their “second life.” And as Lips adds, the group’s rapid-fire workpace will not slow down, despite all the newfound success. “Working. More recording. More gigs. More – more than ever!

On this show I interview James “Tappy” Wright, author of ROCK ROADIE. Tappy Wright was road manager for The Animals, Jimi Hendrix, Tina Turner, Herman’s Hermits, Sting and many other legendary artists. This book arrived in my mailbox several months ago and since I’m not a huge fan of any of these artists (with the exception of The Animals) it stayed on my shelf for a while. When I finally got around to reading it I was really glad I did. There is story after story after story about life on the road and all that comes with it. Having sex with groupies, band fighting, partying, it’s all there and Tappy holds nothing back. One of the big selling points in the book is what he claims is proof positive that Jimi Hendrix was murdered. He goes into great detail about how it happened. On the show you will hear that and quite a few other great stories from the book. If you are a student of rock history like I am, then I think you are going to like this interview(and the book).

Cooking With Butler-March of The Crab Cakes

A Christmas tradition at our house is a dungenes crab feast. I always make sure I get more crab than I need so O can make crab cakes the next day. This recipe is made Louisiana style with creole seasoning and the “holy trinity”, which is onions, celery and bell peppers. So far it is the best tasting crab cakes I’ve ever had. It is better and much cheaper than you will get in even the finest restaurants. As a bonus, I show you a quick and easy caesar salad recipe. I’m getting hungry just writing this!
Recipe follows:

Note: I had 2 lbs of crab so I quadrupled this recipe on the episode

Ingredients

1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
3 tablespoons finely chopped celery
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large egg
1 tablespoon sour cream
1/2 teaspoon yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
3/4 teaspoon cayenne
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons thinly sliced scallion greens
16 saltines, finely ground
1/2 lb jumbo lump crabmeat, picked over
1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Accompaniments: tartar sauce and lemon wedgesCook onion, bell pepper, and celery in 1 tablespoon butter in a 10-inch nonstick skillet over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are softened, about 8 minutes.Whisk together egg, sour cream, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne, and salt in a large bowl, then stir in scallion, cooked vegetables, and 1/4 cup saltine crumbs. Gently stir in crabmeat, then form into 4 cakes (2 1/2 to 3 inches in diameter). Dredge cakes in remaining saltine crumbs.
Heat oil and remaining 2 tablespoons butter in cleaned skillet over moderate heat until foam subsides, then cook crab cakes, turning once, until golden brown, 8 minutes total.

Arguably, pop-metal is a form of power pop, or, at the very least, the two have some things in common. Like the Raspberries, the Go-Go's, or Blondie, a pop-metal act will typically blend rockin', guitar-powered aggression with pop sensibilities. Cheap Trick and Sweet,in fact, are perfect examples of bands that are relevant to both pop-metal and power pop. So it seemed logical when Starz provided a bigndose of outright power pop on its third album, Attention Shoppers!. The band didn't eliminate the pop-metal factor on this 1978 LP; "X-RaynSpex" and "Good Ale We Seek," for example, are the type of pop-mindednhard rock items that one expected from Starz. But tunes like "I'll BenThere," "She" (not to be confused with the Kiss favorite), and "Hold on to the Night" are power pop ditties that wouldn’t have been out of place at a Raspberries session; this isn't to say that Attention Shoppers! is in a class with the Raspberries'nbest work. Starz's third album isn't a masterpiece, but it's competentnand enjoyable. Further, Starz deserves credit for trying somethingndifferent and not turning this LP into a carbon copy of Starz or Violation.

Kiss Live Bootleg – Rock and Roll Geek Show 380

On this show I do a live bootleg of KISS at the Oakland Coliseum from Nov. 22, 2009 complete with ridiculous Paul Stanley stage raps. I start the show off with a song from Rainbow in honor of Ronnie James Dio, who was just diagnosed with stomach cancer.

I went to the Kiss show on Nov. 22nd, 2009 with my friend Casey and his 6 year old son Gage. We arrived at a little after 8pm. Buck Cherry was just wrapping their set up so we missed them. When we got in the venue, it turned out that the nosebleed section our seats were in was closed off due to lack of ticket sales so they upgraded our seats to a lower section. We were seated directly across from the stage. The perfect place for a 6 year old to see a show. It looked like the venue was about half full. When Kiss came on, they put on a 2 hour spectacle with every great rock and roll cliche in the book. I left the show feeling completely entertained. Every guy in the band was giving 110 percent and it showed. Paul Stanley’s voice was a little raspy but he still yelled out every lyric and cheesy stage rap with passion. If they come to your town, go see them. You won’t be disappointed and you can probably get a ticket for fairly cheap. Here was the set list:

On this show I mourn the news about Steven Tyler supposedly quitting Aerosmith, something I predicted would happen during the recent tour. And to mourn this, I play some of my favorite Aerosmith tunes.

According to The Las Vegas Sun:
Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry said today that singer Steven Tyler quit the band following a recent concert in Abu Dhabi.
Bassist Tom Hamilton told the Boston Herald’s Inside Track that there is dissension among the “Bad Boys From Boston,” but that he hopes things can be worked out. He dismissed a report that guitarist Brad Whitford discussed the possiblity of Aerosmith finding a new frontman.
However, Perry told the Las Vegas Sun today that he believes Tyler is history.
“Steven quit as far as I can tell,” Perry said from his Boston home. “I don’t know anymore than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don’t know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don’t know.”
Part of the problem, he says, is that Tyler doesn’t return his phone calls.
“He’s notorious for that,” Perry said. “That’s one thing I’ve learned to live with. I try to overlook it. I like to pick my battles. Frankly, the last few months I’ve been wanting not to rock the boat. I don’t want him canceling any more gigs. We really wanted to do these last four. We just kind of didn’t want to call him out or anything and get him anymore pissed off, for whatever reason. So we just let things lie. So we did the gigs and, like I said, I got off the plane and saw this online. That’s how I know about it.”
Perry will perform his Joe Perry Project Nov. 28 at the Las Vegas House of Blues, performing from his latest release “Have Guitar, Will Travel.”
Most of Aerosmith’s recent world tour was canceled in August after Tyler fell from the stage at a Sturgis, S.D., concert and broke his shoulder. The band members were unhappy with Tyler over the incident. However, Aerosmith salvaged the final leg of the tour, including two shows in Hawaii and one Sunday at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix before more than 50,000 fans.
After the Middle Eastern concert the band parted ways with Perry going to London to attend the Classic Rock & Roll of Honour awards ceremony on Monday. Perry said he arrived home in Boston on Wednesday and read on the Internet that Tyler planned to leave the band.
“He has had no contact with me or the other band members,” Perry said.
He says he hopes to keep Aerosmith together, with or without Tyler, but he was so stunned by recent developments he doesn’t know what’s going to happen.
“Right now I’m adjusting to how we’re going to go on,” Perry says. “Aerosmith is such a powerful band, I mean it’s like a steam locomotive. You just can’t disregard 40 years of four guys who play together as well as they do. We’re just trying to – at least I am – trying to figure out what direction the band should take.
“As far as replacing Steve, it’s not just about that, it’s also four guys that play extremely well together, and I’m not going to see that go to waste. I really don’t know what path it’s going to take at this point, but we’ll probably find somebody else that will sing in those spots where we need a singer and then we’ll be able to move the Aerosmith up a notch, move the vibe up a notch.”
Perry believes Tyler has been planning on leaving for a while.
“Obviously he hasn’t been giving 100 percent to this thing for a long time,” Perry said. “He’s obviously had this planned for a long time. To disregard his brothers to the point where we have to find out about it on the Internet – it’s like, ‘See you later, Bud.’ I still care for him as a person, or at least the person I used to know. But things change.”
Aerosmith rose to popularity in the ’70s with a combination of hard rock and power ballads only to be derailed by drug and alcohol abuse. After Tyler completed rehab in 1986, the band rose to prominence again. There were rumors last year that Tyler had checked back into rehab after more than 20 years of sobriety.
Perry himself left the band for two years in 1979. While he was away he created the solo Joe Perry Project, which has now released five albums.
“The circumstances were different then,” Perry said. “We’d been touring pretty much nonstop for eight years and the band was just pretty much burned out on each other. We needed a break. We needed to take a vacation but blood was running so hot I just had to leave, had to get out of there. But I certainly wasn’t going to stop playing so I put out a solo project.”

The first studio recording after the departure of guitarist Michael Schenker, No Place to Runnset into motion UFO's critical and commercial decline. While only anslight adjustment to the band's successful hard rock formula, thenmidtempo guitar rock bore much more of a resemblance to fading '70snrockers like Bad Company than the coming NWOBHM. Fellow Brits like Def Leppard were cultivating a similar but much more exciting brand of simple, angular hard rock built for the millions of AC/DC-loving Americans, while UFO seemed to be chasing their stylistic tail. About Nardwuar The Human Serviette:

Nardwuar the Human Serviette (born John Ruskin, July 5, 1968) is a Canadian celebrity interviewer and musician from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.^[1] He is the lead singer and keyboardist for The Evaporators and plays in Thee Goblins. He is an indie-rock expert. ^[2]

He legally changed his name in 1986, and argues that “no one refers to Iggy Pop as ‘James Osterberg’”. When asked to explain his name, Nardwuar once quipped “Nardwuar equals dumb silly name, like Sting; Human means human, as in Human Fly; and Serviette is something you can’t get in the U.S. because down there they’re called napkins.”

Nardwuar’s interviews are frequently shown on MuchMusic’s Going Coastal, or printed in Chart. Nardwuar’s favourite targets appear to be musical celebrities, but he’ll interview almost anyone famous.^[4]

His interview style can be quite grating and confusing to those whonhave had no prior experience with him. A typical interview will beginnwith “Who are you?”, followed by “From?” if the subject doesn’tnvolunteer his affiliations. The interview will always end with “Keep onnrockin’ in the free world”, and the “doot doola doot doo…” of “Shave and a Haircut“,nto which the interviewee must respond with the final “doot doo!” beforenNardwuar will let them go. A somewhat common reply by edgy rock starsnsuch as Courtney Love has been “Fuck you!”^[5]

Due to his upfront and esoteric style he has been attacked verbally, physically threatened, and intimidated by people such as Sebastian Bach of Skid Row (who stole Nardwuar’s tuque); the band Quiet Riot (who chased Nardwuar and crew down the street); and Dave Rowntree of Blur. Alice Cooper, Harlan Ellison, Beck and others have hung up on him.^[6]Snoop Dogg has repeatedly stolen various items from Nardwuar, including a Redd Foxx doll and Richard Pryor and Blowfly records^[7] , although Snoop claims to be ‘taking’ the objects in question rather than stealing them. Chris Fehn of Slipknot wouldn’t talk during an interview and left during the interview after having enough of Nardwuar.

Nardwuar’s unorthodox approach often ends up in bizarre scenarios. He once received Lemmy’snanswering machine message when Lemmy was not made aware of theninterview time by his publicist. Guerrilla journalism or not,nNardwuar’s style is very much based on taking the piss out of his subject. Some of his subjects recognise it and successfully manage to reverse the scenario on him, especially Iggy Pop, David Cross and “Weird Al” Yankovic. Some misinterpret his hijinks as intentionally disrespectful, particularly Henry Rollins and pornographer Al Goldstein.

More often the experience confuses the celebrities. Members of GWAR tried not to laugh while in character. Jello Biafranwas impressed with his guerrilla interview style, but became noticeablynangered in a 2000 interview when Nardwuar began to cajole Biafra aboutnBiafra’s lawsuit against former Dead Kennedys band mates ^[8]. Others who have appreciated Nardwuar’s interview include Nirvana, Kelly Rowland, Marilyn Manson, Franz Ferdinand, Ron Jeremy, N.E.R.D. and Michael Moore.

Nardwuar does extensive research on the interviewee to confuse,nscare or impress them; often bringing up minutia about band members’npasts that they have a hard time recalling, until he coaches themnalong. Frequently, he will also attempt to make connections, no matternhow obscure, between the person or subject at question and Canada. Antribute to his research skills, while interviewing Josh Homme, he produced a grade school class photo of Homme mid-interview, who remained blasé yet clearly impressed.

Catholic Boy (1980) is an album by The Jim Carroll Band. Carroll was notable for publishing a memoir, The Basketball Diaries, and poetry collections including Living at the Movies.
